Is Sitting The New Smoking?

Definitely yes! From the driver’s seat, to the office chair to the coach.

Dr. James Levine, director of the May Clinic-Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiative, studied the adverse effects of our increasingly sedentary lifestyles for years, summed up his findings in two sentences. “Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, (Levine is credited for creating this slogan, kills more people than HIV & is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death”.

Seems pretty aggressive, right? But there is evidence that sitting for long periods of time increase the risk of some cancers, heart disease & type 2 diabetes.

Long term sitting effects are not reversible through exercise or other good habits.

Ways to avoid the new “sitting is the new smoking”:

  • Get up at least once every hour and walk around
  • Workout at your desk. Get a mini stationary bike
  • Sit on a stationary ball
  • Walk during lunchtime
  • Get a standing desk (Business Office Outfitters can help you purchase one.)
  • Take the stairs every few hours

Don’t be a walking time bomb. Be proactive with your health and move.
